Alfred Krupp by Arnold Newman.
Krupp originally didn’t want to have Newman take his photo as Krupp had used Jewish slave labor during WWII and Newman is a Jew. Newman argued to take the photo based on his extensive portfolio and Krupp agreed. Which gave Newman the opportunity to extract a little revenge.
I had seen this photo in a number of collections but knowing the back story makes it that much more sinister. Photos never stand on their own, they’re a little piece of time and knowing what happened in that moment makes all the difference.
